Review of Mendham borough, New Jersey

Mendham
Star Rating - 9/12/2006
Mendham Borough is an attractive small town with some historic buildings. Mendham is populated principally by the very affluent. Parts of the town have genuine mansions, but most of Mendham consists of 3-5 bedroom houses worth over $600,000. In the 2006 tax re-evaluation, the average price for a property in Mendham Borough was just about $900,000.

With no "fast food" restaurants to cheapen the main road through town, Mendham enjoys few restaurants or other service establishements, save for a few small establishements in a tiny shopping center. The Black Horse Inn is the notable restaurant.

Mendham's schools and regional high school have great reputations - nonetheless a considerable number (perhaps 25%) of the "eligible students" choose to attend elite private schools in the area - including Delbarton. With no convenient rail connection to New York (the nearest are in Bernardsville and Morristown), Mendham can be compared more to a small town in New England rather than to the brassy suburbs of Bergen County.

Will the developers destroy this island of tranquility? Not likely. The town and the county have been buying up land as it becomes available, although some small houses have been replaced by larger structures on a desirable piece of land.
